Deleted Scene from Viscount's Wager

It's not often that I delete a scene in a book. Usually I'm adding a bit during edits. But Viscount's Wager got long on me, so I ended up cutting two scenes that weren't critical to Anthony and Gabriel's relationship development.

Actually, neither scene featured the guys - one scene was with Max & Tristan (from All In with the Duke) and the other was with Will and Jack (from Sharp Love). The scenes were fun to write, yet needed to be cut. But when I did the cutting, I promised myself I'd share them after the book released just for fun and to give readers a peek into decisions that go into finalizing a book.

I shared Max & Tristan's scene in my September newsletter (and I'll post it here later for those who don't get the newsletter). As promised in the newsletter, here is the other deleted scene from Viscount's Wager.

***SPOILER ALERT***
If you haven't read Viscount's Wager yet, this deleted scene will contain spoilers. Consider yourself warned. If you want to read on, scroll below the cover.
The scene was planned to take place in Chapter 18, between the time when Anthony and Gabriel go from the bedroom down to the study. When I wrote it, I thought I needed to show how Will and Jack knew to go to the house, but then later decided I could cover that with a line of dialogue later in the book.

Originally from Chapter 18...
Sprawled over Jack on the narrow pallet, William Drake lifted his head and listened. There it was again—a distinct thud beneath the sounds of the rain pelting against the barn’s wooden roof.
“Jack.” He gave his lover’s broad shoulder a nudge. “Did you hear that?”
“Pardon?” came Jack’s low, sleep-logged voice from the absolute darkness of the room, his chest rumbling with the word.
“I thought I heard something.”
The immense body beneath him tensed.
Will didn’t know the time, but it felt as though a few hours had passed since they’d fallen asleep. Likely too late for it to be merely Rawling and Tilden engaging in some enthusiastic bedchamber activities. A conclusion Jack must have come to as well.
“Up with you,” Jack said, all-business, the lethargy gone as if it had never been there.
Before Will could marshal his limbs to comply, large hands bracketed his ribcage and lifted him from Jack’s chest as though he weighted nothing. The blankets slipped from his back, cold air smacking his skin.
“Stay here.” There were the sounds of Jack moving about the small room in the loft—boards creaking, the shuffle of clothing.
“Like hell I’m staying here.” Will got to his feet. Where had he left his clothes?
“Will,” Jack admonished. “Stay here.”
“It’s too cold on the pallet without you. Best I get dressed and move about.” It wasn’t a lie. Sleeping on top of Jack had kept him nicely warm, but without a decent fire, the room was downright cold. And damp. Yes, he could stay under the blankets they’d found in the traveling carriage, but he did not want Jack investigating without him. Pummeling fists and brute strength couldn’t always keep one safe. “You don’t want me to catch a chill, do you?”
Another rustle of fabric. Jack let out a grunt, and stopped arguing.
Will felt around in the darkness and found his clothes and boots scattered about near the wooden stool in the corner. As he tugged on his breeches and shirt, he could feel the tension in the air. Tension that radiated from Jack.
“I am certain it is nothing to worry about,” Will said, foregoing his waistcoat and slipping his arms into the sleeves of his coat. “We are in the country. Could be an animal loitering about, or maybe it was just the rain. Or maybe those two haven’t gone to sleep yet. Perhaps they are even more vigorous in bed than we are.”
Another grunt from Jack, yet this one was lower, deeper. Not a sound of agreement.
“It’s possible. Those contained country gentlemen aren’t always as polite as they seem.” A fact Will had learned years ago. “Tilden could have Lord Rawling trussed up and bare-arsed on the bed. Maybe he has a fondness for paddles.” That was something Will did not want to walk in on. It would definitely make it uncomfortable between the four of them in the morning. Though… “Would you like a paddling?” Oh, that idea held definite merit. Jack’s muscular arse reddened and skin blazing hot. Jack bent over and begging him for another swift smack of the paddle. Jack liked to beg, and he really liked submitting. A need that was lodged into his soul. And Jack had grown more comfortable with his desires of late. Perhaps—
“Your greatcoat,” Jack said, completely ignoring Will as though he hadn’t spoken. Heavy fabric was thrust into Will’s hands. “Be sure to button it. It’s raining something fierce.”
All right. Perhaps now wasn’t the best moment to bring up a potential new erotic game for them to indulge in. Another night, then. He’d ask Jack again, and when they had the benefit of some candlelight. The look in Jack’s dark eyes would tell him immediately if he landed on something that sparked Jack’s interest.
Will donned his greatcoat, but before following Jack’s request, he checked the pockets of both it and his coat underneath. One, two, three blades. Four, actually, counting the one he kept in his right boot.
They made their way down the ladder. When they reached the end of the aisle, Jack thrust out an arm, keeping Will from preceding him. There was a squeak of hinges as Jack partially opened the barn door. A gust of wind blew a spray of rain into the aisle, misting Will’s face.
“See anything?” Will asked.
“Just the back of the house, though there is a candle lit in a room on the first floor. One of the windows on the side of the house, near the front. Drapes must be drawn, but there’s some light around the edges.”
“Maybe they haven’t retired yet.” To Will’s knowledge, there were no servants in residence, so it couldn’t be a footman moving about the house.
“We should be cautious, all the same.” Jack fully opened the barn door. “Stay behind me.”
They stepped out of the barn, Will shutting the door behind them. Cold rain smacked Will’s head, his shoulders, his face. The downpour was a constant drone of noise surrounding them. As they came up to the window in question, Jack paused. Yet the drapes were drawn too tightly for them to see into the room.
Jack motioned toward the front. They trudged through water-logged grass. Then Jack abruptly stopped and threw out his arm again, pushing Will behind him and against the side of the house.
“There’s a carriage with a team of four waiting up the drive,” Jack said over his shoulder.
Mr. Tilden had a visitor, in the dead of the night, no less. The preferred time for hired muscle to make a call.
So much for their little holiday in Derbyshire.
“Stay here,” Jack added, then he disappeared around the front of the house.
Like hell Will was staying there. He reached into his greatcoat pocket, fingers wrapping around cold steel, then followed Jack.

New Release and Blog Tour

Viscount's Wager, the 3rd book in the Gambling on Love series, is now available!
You never forget your first love, but is a second chance worth the gamble?

Anthony, Viscount Rawling, knows exactly what he wants in life and he isn't above having a look about London for it. When he spots recently widowed Gabriel Tilden at a ton function, he thinks he might have found love…again.

Gabriel is as gorgeous and reserved as he was when he broke Anthony's heart seven years ago. But they were only adolescents then…surely Anthony won't hold the incident against him. And especially not when the attraction between them is stronger than ever.

Gabriel came to London in search of distraction, and a teasing Anthony is impossible to resist. As Anthony introduces Gabriel to the pleasures that can be found in the city—and in his bedchamber—their bond deepens into something more. Yet both men are hiding secrets that could pull them apart forever…

Viscount’s Wager and Other News

First up, I’ve got news on Viscount’s Wager, book #3 in the Gambling on Love series, which is Rawling’s story. It’s around 100,000 words, and will be my longest book yet. The release date has been set – August 10, 2015 – and it’s available for pre-order at all the usual retailers. I also have the cover art and the blurb. I love that the guys are kissing on the cover.

Brook Street: Rogues will be available in a Japanese language edition published by Harlequin, in both print and for Kindle, on May 25, 2015. I won’t be able to read a word of the book, but I am completely in love with the cover.
It even has a step back cover…well it’s more of a wrap-around cover, as the cover art will wrap around to the back of the book (Japanese language books open to the right, versus the left for English language books).
*swoon* I need to find a way to get that made into a poster to hang in my office.

In other news, His Client will be available in audio from Audible in about 3 months. I’ll post when it’s available. And it will be available in a French language edition sometime later this year.

I’d mentioned a few months ago that I was planning to write a novella for Sam from Brook Street: Thief later this year. Well, I now have a title to share – To Kiss a Thief – and it will feature Sam Fox and Pascal Linden. And can I say, I love the name Pascal. So glad I can finally use it, and it totally fits Sam’s curious genius of a hero.

Last but certainly not least, I’ve started working on Convincing the Secretary, the 3rd book in the London Legal series. The current tentative release date is March 2016.

And that's all for me right now. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

2015 Updates and the Year Ahead

With the new year comes a look ahead. Here are my plans for 2015:

The to-write list includes:

  • Finishing up Viscount’s Wager (Gambling on Love #3). I’m really loving how this book is coming together. The book has sort of a ‘second chance romance’ theme. Anthony’s (Viscount Rawling’s) hero was his teenage crush, the gorgeous and reserved Gabriel Tilden, who was Anthony’s best friend’s older brother.
  • Writing Convincing the Secretary (London Legal #3). This one will feature Edward Fenton, the mild-mannered and not-so-diligent secretary in Convincing Leopold. His hero? The ruthless new solicitor in the office. There’s unrequited love, wicked naughty games, and some angst. One of my favorite kinds of stories to write :)
  • Writing a novella for Sam from Brook Street: Thief. Sam was Cavin’s younger ‘brother’, and his story will take place 6 years after Thief. It will be kind of New Adult-ish, since he’ll be 19 yrs old and his love interest will be 21. I’ve got some scene ideas scribbled out, and this one is going to be tons of fun.

The 2015 to-be-released list includes:

  • His Client, 3/17/2015. This is a re-release. I got the rights back from Loose Id, and will self-publish it this spring with a shiny new cover, some minor edits, and a new lower price. The re-release is currently available for pre-order and it’s available on NetGalley for any reviewers/bloggers who want to request it for review.
  • Viscount’s Wager. TBD release date, though it looks like sometime in 2015. Once I get the book finished, I’ll have a better idea of when it will be available.
  • Sam’s book. Currently targeting late 2015 for a release date. This will be a self-published title. Cooper Davis (a very dear friend of mine) and I decided to collaborate on a duology. My contribution will be Sam’s book, and Cooper is contributing a historical New Adult set in the fantasy world from her Noble Pleasures series.

For those who are counting, that’s 2 new releases and 1 re-release in 2015, with 2 new novellas to write and about a ¼ of a novel. A part of me feels like it’s not enough, that I should be producing more. The epub & indie markets move quickly. There are authors who have the gift of production and can write amazing books in a relatively short amount of time. I, unfortunately, am not so gifted. My muse is a slowpoke, and in order for him to work at his best, he likes to go slow. It’s something I’ve come to accept. I’ve also been working on writing/life balance. Being in the writing cave all the time is no fun. I need to take time to enjoy life and friends and family. And when I do that, it makes writing much more fun. So that’s my focus for 2015 – balance.

If you are wondering about the London Legal novellas, those are currently slated to be released starting in January 2016 with the re-release of Convincing Arthur (currently available for pre-order), followed by the re-release of Convincing Leopold, and then the release of the new 3rd book in the series, Convincing the Secretary. 2016 may seem like forever away, but given my writing schedule/pace and production lead times coupled with wanting to release the books in the series close together, January 2016 ended up being the start date.

Last but not least, for those who have asked if I’ll have more books available in audio, I received word that Sharp Love and Viscount’s Wager will be available from Audible. Sharp Love will be available in audio in about 6 months or so. Viscount’s Wager will either be available when the ebook releases or afterward.

So that’s my look ahead into 2015. After a beyond hectic 2014, I have a feeling 2015 will be a very good year, and I’m super excited about the books on my to-write list. Here’s to a great 2015 for everyone!

Coming Soon Updates

I hope everyone in the US had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. The weather is actually warming up a bit here in the Midwest, so the daily high temps are above freezing again...for the time being.

In Coming Soon news, the release date Viscount's Wager (book #3 in the Gambling on Love series) has been pushed out. The book will release sometime in 2015. As for exactly when...I'm not sure yet. 2014 was an unexpectedly hectic year. I'll be very glad to have this year behind me. Plus, Viscount's Wager is turning out to be longer than expected. It will be even longer than All In with the Duke, which currently holds the title of my longest book.

In good news, I'm loving the way Viscount's Wager is coming together. Seriously, love. Rawling has been super fun to write, and he and his hero, Gabriel Tilden, bring the angst and the smexy times. I hope readers love their story enough to forgive the delay in the book's release.

For anyone who had pre-ordered the book and had their pre-order cancelled, there's no reason to worry and you have my apologies. Once a new release date is set, then the book will go back up for pre-order, and I'll also update the blog and my website with the new release date.

Paperback, Pre-Order, and Blitz News

All In with the Duke is now available in trade paperback! Max and Tristan look so handsome in print :) If you're interested in snapping up your own copy, it's available at Amazon US.

This print edition is part of a test by Carina Press to see how well books from their line will do in print. If the books selected for the test sell well, then Carina might offer more books in print in the future.

In other news, Viscount's Wager (Gambling on Love #3) is now available on Amazon US and Amazon UK for pre-order. No blurb or cover yet, but I can tell you the book features Anthony, Viscount Rawling, and Gabriel Tilden who showed up (or were mentioned) in All In with the Duke and Sharp Love. And I have a release date for the book - December 1st, 2014.
Amazon US - pre order
Amazon UK - pre order

June is Pride Month, and Carina Press is celebrating by hosting a Pride Week Blitz featuring Sharp Love, The Lost Year (by Libby Drew), Stranger on the Shore (by Josh Lanyon) and Maybe This Time (by A.M. Arthur). I've included links below to a few of the blogs participating in the Blitz (there are a lot of participating blogs and well, that would be a lot of copy/pasting, so I just picked a few). There's a tour-wide giveaway, too (2x ebook copies of all 4 books in the Blitz and a cool rainbow bracelet). And if you are interested in checking out Carina's full section of fabulous M/M books, check out their new 'Discover Male/Male Fiction' page.

That's it for me. Hope everyone is having a wonderful week!

Paperback News

My big news to share is that All In with the Duke will be available in trade paperback on June 2, 2014! Carina Press is doing a test on a small number of books to see how well they do in trade paperback, and All In with the Duke was selected as one of the ‘test’ books. So if Max and Tristan (and the other books in the test) sell well in paper, then maybe Carina will decide to expand the program to more books. Which means maybe someday the other books in the Gambling on Love series and The Brook Street Collection will also be available in print.

It’s about three weeks until Sharp Love releases! For any bloggers/reviewers/those who like to post reviews – the book is now available on NetGalley.

I went to Chicago North’s Spring Fling conference a few weeks ago and had a fabulous time. J. Leigh Bailey, Stephani Hecht, Jackie Nacht and I presented a workshop on M/M romance (which was moderated by T.A Chase), I participated in my first book signing, and got to meet some lovely authors. It was my first writing conference as a published author (I obviously don’t get out much) and meeting people who have read my books and enjoyed them…there’s nothing quite like that feeling. It was kind of like having Sally Field moments. I tried to maintain my composure and not geek-out too much, but I’ll admit, meeting readers left me with a ridiculous smile on my face.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! I’m ducking back in the writing cave to continue working on Viscount’s Wager, the 3rd book in the Gambling on Love series. I’m loving how the book is coming together. Oh, the drama. Oh, the angst. Oh, the smex…and if all goes well with the angst today, then I should be writing some smex later tonight. :)

Cover Lovin' - Sharp Love

I received the finalized cover art for Sharp Love, which is book #2 in the Gambling on Love series! I love getting cover art - makes me so happy. As always, Carina's marketing department did a fabulous job.

The book is currently slated for release in June 2014. No blurb yet, but I can tell you the book features Jack Morgan, who was Max's ever-useful, giant of a carriage driver/bodyguard/tracker-downer of ex-boyfriends from All In with the Duke. Jack's a principled, honorable kind of guy. And his hero, William Drake, is not so principled. Will and Jack have a history, a long one at that. I think of it as an 'old friends to lovers' book. Jack eventually ended up in Max's employ, and Will stayed in the East End of London where he 'works' as a card sharp. In Sharp Love, you'll find out how Jack is so good at tracking down 'missing' ex-boyfriends and other random people for Max, and what exactly Jack did with his time while he was seeing to an 'errand' for Max in the last 1/4 of All In with the Duke. ...yeah, Jack does a lot of work for Max that needs air quotes.

In other news, I'm currently working on Viscount's Wager, book #3 in the Gambling on Love series. It features Anthony, Viscount Rawling, who was Max's best friend, and Gabriel Tilden, one of the people Jack tracks down in All In with the Duke. Gabriel was Anthony's teenage crush and has the distinction of being Anthony's first kiss. Ah, thwarted young love! And that's all I'll say about that book, as I'm currently writing it and haven't finished it yet. :)

I'm totally late on this one (I blame my beyond hectic weekend) and the sale/giveaway is over, but I have to give a shout-out to Oliver and Vincent. Joyfully Jay picked her 15 all time favorite Loose Id books as part of her birthday celebration/sale, and Bound by Deception was on her list. Yay for Oliver and Vincent!

It is currently -2 degrees in my neck of the woods and spring can't get here soon enough. Hope everyone's staying warm and having a nice January!

Update - What's Up with Ava

Now that All In with the Duke has been released, I'm about to head back into the writing cave. So I thought now would be a good time to give an update on what's on deck and what will be coming soon-ish.

- The Convincing series is changing homes. Convincing Arthur and Convincing Leopold are currently unavailable, but they will be re-released in early 2015 from Samhain Publishing.

- There will also be a new book in the Convincing series - Convincing the Secretary. It will feature Edward Fenton, one of Arthur's secretaries (not the diligent worker, but the one who was infatuated with Arthur). You haven't met his hero yet, but the guy was mentioned in a round about way at the end of Convincing Leopold. The series will likely release in back-to-back-to-back months, so early-ish 2015 for the new book.

- Beyond Reckless is currently unavailable. To be honest, I haven't yet decided what I want to do with the story. I adore Rys and Martin - they were fun characters to write. I've toyed with an idea of a prequel, a 'how they became a couple' story. Or maybe I'll just self-pub Beyond Reckless as a stand alone short story. I've got a lot of my plate for the next few months, so likely I won't decide what to do with the story for a while. One way or another though, it will eventually be available again.

And I swear, the 'currently unavailable' thing is not a new pattern with me. It's just how the timing worked with these three books. And the fact I decided to move them is not at all a reflection of my experiences with the respective publishers. Both are wonderful publishers.

- Sharp Love (book #2 in the Gambling on Love series) has been sent off to my lovely editor, and is scheduled to release June 2014. It's Jack Morgan's book (he was Max's carriage driver in All In with the Duke). And since I'm feeling the love for Jack and his card sharp hero, William Drake, here's a short quote from the unedited book:
“You washed my hair. Never done that before.” Jack more mumbled than spoke. “It was nice.”
“Looks like you found it more than nice, Jack.”

- Next up on the to-write list is Viscount's Wager (book #3 in the Gambling on Love series). It will be Anthony, Viscount Rawling's book (he was Max's best friend). If you've read All In with the Duke, you can probably guess his hero will be a gentleman by the name of Gabriel Tilden.

- I spent the Thanksgiving holiday setting up a new office. I will no longer be the Author Under the Cupboards. Took one of the spare bedrooms and turned it into an office, complete with a desk and a dry erase board and everything. Here's the new writing cave, including the photo-bombing dogs:

The muses also made the move. They seem happy in their new home, though Kidlet is after me to free four of the marbies from their 'jails'. She used to call them man-barbies, but now they are just my 'marbies'. So far, I've been able to keep her from freeing them. They are safer there - heck, today I found Jake nekkid in the shower of the barbie townhouse. Being a man-barbie and living outside of a box is dangerous in my house.

- Last but definitely not least, a huge thank you to everyone who has picked up All In with the Duke. I really hope you enjoyed Max and Tristan's book :)

Random News - Updated Shorts, Release Dates, and Yummy Covers

First up, The Brook Street Collection is currently available. For anyone who hasn't read Thief, Fortune Hunter and Rogues, and who might be interested in checking out the books, they are now available in one collection.

I finally finished updating both Bound series free short stories (and you can thank Lou Harper of Harper by Design for the yummy covers). The stories are now available at Smashwords, Kobo, B&N, and Amazon (though they are currently $0.99 there). I also updated the versions on All Romance eBooks and GoodReads. Check out the stories' pages on my website for links to the various resellers - Deliberately Unbound & Deliberately Bound.

In WIP news, I am still working on All In With the Duke, though I am SO close to the end. Like, half-way into the last chapter, close. The book will definitely be novel length - I've already pushed past the 75,000 word mark (but we'll see what gets trimmed in edits). And, I got release dates/months/seasons for the books in the upcoming Gambling on Love series:

  • All In With the Duke = November 2013
  • Sharp Love = Spring 2014
  • Viscount's Wager = Fall 2014

And last but not least, Fortune Hunter has been nominated in the Best GLBT - Historical Romance  category of The Romance Reviews' Best Book of 2012. *pats Julian and Oscar on the back* If you're interested in voting, you can hop on over to http://www.theromancereviews.com/bookvote.php to cast your ballot for books in all the categories, though you do need to log in or create an account to vote for books. Voting open until March 31.

Happy Belated First Day of Spring!! I remain hopeful the weather gods will actually bring spring to Michigan, but so far...no such luck.

Coming Soon - A New Series

I have book news!! I am going to have a new series, tentatively titled Gambling on Love, with Carina Press. The series will include All In With the Duke, Sharp Love, and Viscount's Wager. Regency M/M erotic books ('cause, you know, what else would I write?) with a bit of D/s, yet this time the books will be longer, my first novel-length Ava books. It will be a related series, like the Brook Street series, with different heroes in each book, though most of the guys make appearances in all the books.

I rambled a bit about the first book in my Next Big Thing blog hop post. TBD on release dates, though I'm guessing fall-ish 2013 for the first book, and sometime in 2014 for the other 2 books.

Here's the announcement from Publishers Marketplace -

Ava March's ALL IN WITH THE DUKE, SHARP LOVE, and VISCOUNT'S WAGER, in the Gambling on Love series, in which a duke, a card sharp, and a viscount find love with an irresistibly beautiful prostitute, a principled old friend, and a gambling-addicted widower, to Angela James at Carina Press, by Kevan Lyon at Marsal Lyon Literary Agency (World).

Once I have release dates and blurbs, I'll post them on the blog and on my website.
